Ban on 25 Apps, OTT Platforms, and Websites Displaying Obscene Content

Includes Alt Balaji, Ullu, Big Shots App, DesiFlix, and others

New Delhi – The Information & Broadcasting Ministry has directed the blocking of websites and apps of at least 25 OTT platforms for allegedly providing obscene, vulgar, and in some cases pornographic content. The action was taken in consultation with the ministries of Home Affairs, Women and Child Development, Electronics and Information Technology, Department of Legal Affairs, as well as industry bodies such as FICCI and CII, and experts in the fields of women and child rights. *Utilising the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the IT Rules, 2021, notifications have been issued to the various intermediaries to ensure that access to the concerned websites and apps is disabled,” said a source on Friday (July 25, 2025).

In this regard, the government had received references from the National Commission on Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) in July and August 2024, flagging Ullu and ALTT platforms. Numerous complaints were made by the general public. Save Culture Save Bharat Foundation had also sought action. Uday Mahurkar, head of the foundation, had called on the government to act against mainstream platforms like Netflix also last June. Such content represents “blatant unlawful acts threatening to tear apart India’s character and cultural heritage,” Mr. Mahurkar had said.

The contents of 26 websites and 14 apps (nine on Google Play Store, five on Apple App Store) have been blocked. According to the government, the contents in question included sexual innuendos and, in some cases, long portions of sexually explicit scenes involving nudity thereby being pornographic in nature. “There was hardly any storyline, theme or message in a social context. A large portion of the content was obscene and vulgar,” an official pointed out.

The OTT platforms include Big Shots App, Desiflix, Boomex, NeonX VIP, Navarasa Lite, Gulab, Kangan, Bull, ShowHit, Jalva, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Fugi, Feneo, ShowX, Sol Talkies, Adda TV, ALTT, HotX VIP, Hulchul, MoodX, Triflicks, Ullu, and Mojflix.
