Many technical snags in production of US Boeing Company

The employee exposing snags died in suspicious manner

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) –  After the accident of Air India’s Boeing 787 Dream airliner, the technical problems in this plane are coming forth. It has now been reported that though it is the first time in the history of America’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner, such an accident occurred but in the earlier few incidents, such accidents were somehow averted.

1. As per the report of ‘Aero Inside’, problems with the engine, gear, flap, pressure reduction in cabins and problems related to flying at high altitudes have been revealed. Air India has bought and has been flying Boeings and has been facing problems since then. On 13.12.2024, AI-113 flight of Air India from New Delhi to Birmingham (Britain), the plane developed a hydraulic problem in its ‘nose gear’ on Birmingham’s runway-15.

2. Air India’s dreamliners have so far faced 136 problems causing huge losses to Air India. After such problems, the US federal Aviation Administration started an inquiry into dreamliners.

3. During 2014-2024, Air India experienced many hitches in dreamliner. Many travellers were injured due to the technical snags but Karnavati accident has been the most serious causing highest fatalities.

4. In March 2013, Japan Airlines’ Boeing 787 twice developed problems with fuel leakage making it difficult to take off. Similarly, there was news about problems with the main battery of United Airlines Boeing 787. Later, Japan and the USA stopped flying Boeing airplanes for some time.

5. The Boeing Company had advised Air India to avoid flying dreamliners in areas facing strong winds and cyclones as it increases the danger of ice forming on its engine. For the same reason, Delhi-Tokyo flight had to be cancelled. Air India’s Delhi- Kolkata 787 returned to Delhi as the strong winds developed cracks in the plane.

A former engineer working with Boeing had revealed the problems

In 2024, Sam Salehpour, an engineer with Boeing had raised questions on the airplane’s structure. He had stated that Boeing has used some ‘short-cuts’ while making the planes.

Some of the parts were wrongly assembled in ‘Fuselage’ of a Boeing 787 which can come out in the air after thousands of take offs.

A former employee disclosing use of sub-standard parts in Boeing dies in suspicious manner

John Barnett

A former employee of Boeing, John Barnett, died in a suspicious manner in 2017. Barnett worked in Boeing for 30 years. He was the only employee who gave evidence in a case against Boeing before his death. He had reported to the company managers about the use of sub-standard parts in construction of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. To complete the construction of planes in time, the substandard parts were taken out from trash and fitted in the planes. The security measures were compromised to complete the construction in a haste. The construction work was finished in a hurry. There was a flaw in the emergency oxygen system and flying such planes could be 25% defective. No action was, however, taken on his report. Barnett had to face strong opposition after he filed a case and in 2024, he died in a suspicious manner. Later, his family members filed a case against Boeing making reference to the mental shock sustained by him.

Richard Cuevas

In the review by ‘US National Transportation Safety Board’ in 2017, some of the observations made by Barnett were checked and Boeing was asked to undertake corrective measures. In 2023, Boeing’s technical expert Richard Cuevas had alleged the company of substandard manufacturing and later, he too was dismissed from his job.

Accidents of Boeing 737 airplanes

In 2024, Boeing 737-800 crash-landed in South Korea, killing about 180 passengers. In January 2024, the plug door of Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft operated by Alaska Airlines detached from the plane. In 2018 and 2019 accidents, 189 and 157 travellers respectively, lost their lives. Even then, Boeing 737-800 airplanes are still operating.

Editorial Perspective

India has a contract with Boeing for purchase of 200 planes. Now, it is necessary to re- consider the contract.
