Houses, shops, and vehicles set on fire: 10 injured

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – On May 22nd, a mob of Muslims, set fire to Hindu homes in Mashihati village, Jessore district following the killing of a Muslim over a fishing dispute.
1. Tarikul Islam, a leader of the Kisan Dal, had an ongoing conflict with Piltu Biswas over control of a pond used for fish farming. Although the pond originally belonged to someone else, Tarikul was allegedly trying to seize it. He was eventually shot dead during the dispute.
2. In retaliation, a mob of Muslims attacked Hindu homes in the village. Over 20 houses were set on fire, 4 shops were vandalized, and 2 shops were torched. 6 vehicles—including a van and 52-wheelers—were also destroyed. More than 10 Hindus were injured, and a young man named Sagar Biswas was abducted. Police, army personnel, and fire brigade officials arrived approximately 2 hours after the incident.
3. Fearing further violence, most Hindu men fled the village following the attack. Sagar Biswas, who had been kidnapped, was later rescued.
4. Abdul Aleem, Officer-in-Charge of Abhaynagar Police Station, stated that no case had yet been registered regarding Tarikul Islam’s murder. He added that the situation was now under control, and police forces have been deployed in the area.
