Name ‘Shivaji University’ has to be expanded to ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj University’

Thousands of Hindus take out a protest march for the demand in Kolhapur

Photographs of the historic march organized to rename it as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj University!

Kolhapur – Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) and ‘Hindu Rashtra Samnavay Samiti (HRSS)’ jointly took out a huge march on 17.03.2005 to the district collector’s office for their demand to expand the name of ‘Shivaji University’ to ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj University’. Thousands of Hindus unanimously demanded the expansion of ‘Shivaji University (SU)’ to ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj University (CSMU)’.

The march started from ‘Dasara Chowk’ with the garlanding of the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj by the participating eminent personalities. It passed through different areas such as Lakshmipuri, Venus Corner the ‘B News’ office, etc., and concluded at the district collector’s office. A memorandum was submitted to the district administration; along with another memorandum demanding to stop giving funds for the maintenance of Aurangzeb’s tomb and thus stop its glorification, besides the demand to remove the tomb.

Various spiritual organisations, pro-Hindu organisations, political parties, youth committees, social organisations and trade unions joined this march. Many shopkeepers kept their shops closed for two hours to participate in the march. Sanatan Sanstha’s ‘Dharmapracharak’ Sadguru Swati Khadye also graced the event with her presence.

BJP’s staunch pro-Hindu MLA T Rajasingh; Shri Shivpratishthan Hindustan’s national president, Mr Raosaheb Desai; Sanatan Sanstha’s ‘Dharmapracharak’ Abhay Vartak; HRSS national coordinator Sunil Ghanwat; ‘Chhatrapati Group’s founder Pramod dada Patil; besides the descendants of mawlas who served in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s army expressed their views in the end on conclusion of the march. Among the descendants were Mr Anandrao Kashid, the descendant of Veer Shiva Kashid, Mr Kunal Malusare, the descendant of Sardar Malusare and the descendants of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s army chief Hambirrao Mohite.

Views expressed by a few dignitaries

1. Power of united Hindus will give apt reply to the opposition of progressive factions – T Raja Singh MLA, Telangana

Today, we have not assembled here only for the march for our demand of expansion of the name of Shivaji University; but we have come here for the protection of Hindus’ identity and glory and to take an oath of establishing ‘Hindavi Swarajya’. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj University is not just a university, but it is our pride. I have come here to throw an open challenge to those progressive factions and secularists, who have been trying to confer the ‘Chhatrapati’ title. Hindu power of unity is exhibited here today. There are still many encroachments on Vishalgad in Kolhapur which should be immediately removed by the Government; else Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s mawlas will have to take up that movement.

On one hand, the Government has no money to give to the temple of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Sindhudurg district and on the other hand, the State Archaeology Department has been spending millions on maintaining Aurangzeb’s tomb at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. This will not be tolerated. The money spent by the Government on maintaining Aurangzeb’s tomb should be immediately stopped and the tomb should also be removed.

Impose a ban on Comrade Pansare’s book titled ‘Shivaji Kon Hota (Who was Shivaji)? – Demands Hindu Rashtra Samanvay Samiti (HRSS)

Mr Sunil Ghanwat of HRSS stated that instead of referring to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with respect, who is this Comrade Pansare to write a book ‘Shivaji Kon Hota?’. Referring to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in a derogatory manner is an attack on Hindus’ identity and the Government is expected to ban such a book. Terrorist Kasab was tried in the Supreme Court and convicted, still, a book was written titled ‘Who Killed Karkare ?’ doubting the credibility of Indian investigation agencies. The true colours of the progressive factions who are supporting this book are now being exposed.

2. A movement will be started across the whole State if the name is not changed in the budgetary session – Sunil Ghanwat, HRSS

It is unfortunate that on the day of Shiva-Jayanti, a demand to give his name has to be made. The opposition is not only to the word ‘Chhatrapati’ but to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj himself. If Nehru can be called Pundit, Gandhi can be called ‘Mahatma’, why is there objection to calling ‘Chhatrapati’ for Shivaji Maharaj? In an order issued by the Maharashtra Government in February 2011, it has been mentioned that ‘National heroes and revolutionaries should not be denigrated. These progressive factions call themselves patrons of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, but it is their fake patronage; their selected patronage because these people don’t say a word against the glorification of Aurangzeb’s tomb, keeping Aurangzeb as their status (display picture) on social media.

SU will not be allowed to be JNU in any case

In Maharashtra, there are universities with full names as ‘Savitribai Phule Pune Vidyapith’; ‘Punyashlok Ahilyabai Holkar Vidyapith’ and ‘Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Krushi Vidyapith’ and there is no opposition; however, when Shivaji University (SU) is to be changed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj University (CSMU), there is objection. Today, students raise slogans of dividing India into pieces at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU); Swami Vivekananda’s statue is desecrated; sweets are distributed after the killing of Indian soldiers by Naxalites. Similar things will have to be prevented from happening at CSMU and it will have to be seen that CSMU doesn’t follow the footsteps of JNU. Kolhapur will never tolerate it. The name of SU has to be changed in the current budgetary session, otherwise, a movement will be undertaken for this demand.

3. This fight will go on till the true ideology of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj doesn’t get inculcated in students: Abhay Vartak, Sanatan Sanstha

The people who refer to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with disrespect, are unable to bear the expansion of the name of the university. The expansion in the name has been mainly opposed by the progressive, leftist and anti-Hindu factions and they are fabricating stories around the short name. We shall not, therefore, tolerate their ploy of declaring Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as a secular king. The State of Chhatrapati has been known as ‘Hindavi Swarajya’ but here, it is unfortunate that there is not even a saffron flag in front of his statue. Our fight will not, therefore, be limited to the expansion of the name but it will continue till the true ideology of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not inculcated in students.
