Dhaka, Bangladesh – Islamic fundamentalist extremely annoyed because of the talk of giving women their rights in Bangladesh. They have expressed their opposition to women being given share in the property. They have said that it is against the tenets of Islam. The Commission working for women’s rights in Bangladesh have recently given a report to the Chief Advisor to the Interim Government Muhammad Yunus. The report had 433 recommendations for the welfare of women. Bangladeshi organisations like ‘Jamat-e-Islami’, ‘Islamic Movement Bangladesh’, and ‘Hefazat-e-Islam’ have declared that the recommendations are unacceptable. They have demanded that Yunus rejects the recommendations.

The Women’s Commission in its report had asked for equal rights for men and women in Bangladesh. On being asked about this Miyan Parwar Secretary of the ‘Jamat-e-Islami’ said that this is against the tenets of Islamic Law, and implementing it would mean opposing the ‘Shariah’.

Yunus urges govt to scrap these recommendations

‘Islamic Movement Bangladesh’s women’s wing has said that this report is not in connection with cultural and religious subjects. ‘Hefhajat -e-Islam’ has demanded that the Women’s Commission be scrapped.

Editorial Perspective

Women are considered objects to be enjoyed. Hence when there is talk of women’s rights; it is not surprising that such reaction comes from the fundamentalists ! It is important that Hindu girls agreeing to convert to Islam because they are infatuated by the courting of Muslim youth remember this fact.
