New Delhi – According to India’s 2011 Census, at least 177 cities and villages are still named after the barbaric Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Among them, 63 places are named ‘Aurangabad’ with 48 located in Uttar Pradesh alone. In addition to Aurangabad, there are: Aurangpura (35), Aurangnagar (3), Aurangzebpur (13), Aurangpore (7), and Aurangbar (1), plus 38 more villages bearing similar names. Variations like Aurangabad Khalsa and Aurangabad Dalchand also exist on this list.

1. Under Yogi Adityanath government, Uttar Pradesh has been actively renaming places associated with the Mughal era.
2. Maharashtra has 26 cities and villages named after Aurangzeb, while Bihar ranks third with 12 such locations.
3. Other states with places named after Aurangzeb include: Andhra Pradesh (4), Gujarat (2), Haryana (7), Madhya Pradesh (7), Rajasthan (1), Uttarakhand (3), West Bengal (1).
4. In Delhi, Aurangzeb Road was renamed after former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam a few years ago.
