1. The High Court stated, “We have received an application, inter alia, praying for a direction upon the State and the College authorities to provide adequate security and protection in the Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri College and the Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College situated at Prince Anwar Shah Road, Kolkata and to ensure that no outsider can forcefully enter into the college campus and hamper the free ingress and egress to the Saraswati Pujas that are to take place there.”
2. Mohammad Shabbir Ali, General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (Trinamool Congress’s student wing), stands accused of issuing threats and attempting to halt the Puja. Students alleged that they received threats of rape and murder for organising the Puja. Following the High Court’s order, the students expressed relief, stating that they have the right to celebrate their Dharma.
3. West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee had previously stated that, just like last year, permission should be granted for Puja at Jogesh Chandra Law College. He emphasised that strict action should be taken against those attempting to stop it. Any attempt to disrupt the Puja would not be tolerated, and those issuing threats, using force, or attempting to obstruct the event must face severe consequences. Banerjee made this statement on 30thJanuaryfollowing allegations made by the students.
4. A female student said, “These outsiders come to the college to extort money. They think we should not organise the Puja of Shri Saraswatidevi. They abused and assaulted us and even threatened us with rape.”
5. Another student said, “We have the right to organise the Puja. Why are we being stopped? We have been told that if we hold the Puja, we will be killed while crossing Anwar Shah Road. They are collecting money here.”
6. Principal Pankaj Roy stated, “Last year, I faced harassment while entering the college. In my 40-year career, I have never seen anything like this. Trinamool Congress goons had previously spread rumours that the college administration had not granted permission for the Puja.” He added that letters had been sent to both the State and Union Governments regarding the incident.
