Taking a holy bath during Kumbha increases herd immunity : BHU

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and affiliated research institutes’ report

(‘Herd immunity’ is the process of building immunity in a large population under certain conditions, which can stop the spread of a disease)

Prayagraj – Taking a holy bath during Kumbha Parva increases the herd immunity, stated Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and affiliated research institutes, in a report of joint research conducted by them. This conclusion has been drawn from the analysis of 765 water samples during the 2013 Kumbha Parva, as well as the blood samples, kidney, liver and other organ function test reports of 1,000 devotees before and after bathing. Similar research was also conducted during the Ardha Kumbh Parva of 2019.

Dr. Vachaspati Tripathi, of the N.S. Tripathi Memorial Foundation, who was involved in this research, said,

1. Lakhs of devotees take a holy bath at the Triveni Sangam during Kumbha Mela. The presence of certain microorganisms, bacteria and viruses in the holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati provides a ‘natural vaccination’ to the devotees who take the bath.

2. These various microorganisms have various positive effects on the bodies of the Kalpavasi and devotees who bathe here. The increase in white blood cells (immunoglobulin) after bathing stimulates the immune system.

3. When devotees come together and take a holy bath, the ability to resist diseases is created in their bodies and various organs related to their diet.

4. This research is proving that social participation, and the inclusion of various microbes can lead to overall natural vaccination and the development of herd immunity.
