I Should Not Have Used the Term ‘Saffron Terrorism’

Senior Congress Leader and Former Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde Admits Regret

Mumbai – “I should not have used the term ‘Saffron Terrorism.’ It was my party that told me saffron terrorism existed, and I used the term based on that. However, I did not know why I used it, and it was a mistake. There is no such thing as white, red, or saffron terrorism,” said senior Congress leader and former Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde. During the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government, he had criticized the existence of ‘Saffron Terrorism.’ (It is pertinent to note that despite the existence of Islamic terrorism, Congress leaders never called it so. – Editor.) He recently gave an interview, which is yet to be aired, but some clips have been released, in which Shinde can be seen making the above statements.

When did he use the term ‘Saffron Terrorism’?

In January 2013, during a Congress session in Jaipur, Shinde had used the term ‘Saffron Terrorism,’ holding certain Hindu organizations responsible for acts of terrorism in the country. He used this term during his speech on the final day of the Congress party’s Chintan Shivir. He stated, “Investigations by the Ministry of Home Affairs have revealed that some Hindutva organizations are running training camps to spread terrorism.”

Editorial Perspectives

  • Will Shinde’s statement erase the stigma of terrorism that tarnished the global reputation of Hindus due to the use of the term ‘Saffron Terrorism’? Hindus believe strict action should be taken against him.
  • This incident highlights how far Congress can go for appeasement of Muslims. Such a Congress is not only dangerous for Hindus but for the entire nation, and Hindus must take steps to end its political existence.
