Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) – “The unfortunate thing was that the Jammu and Kashmir Government had nothing to do with Mohammad Afzal’s execution. Otherwise, you (Union Government) would have had to do it with the permission of the State Government, which I can tell you in no uncertain terms would not have been forthcoming. We wouldn’t have done it. I don’t believe that any purpose was served by executing him,” stated National Conference leader Omar Abdullah. Assembly elections are going to be held in Jammu and Kashmir. He has made this statement in that background. Afzal was sentenced to death by a Court for the attack on Parliament in 2001.

Reacting to Omar Abdullah’s statement, BJP leader Sajid Yusuf said that it was necessary to hang Mohammad Afzal to give justice to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Editorial Perspective

Perhaps Omar Abdullah feels that way as only one Jihadi terrorist has been executed so far i.e. Afzal Guru. If India had executed the hundreds of terrorists caught so far and the Jihadis who helped them, terrorism in Kashmir would have been eradicated.
