Action should be taken against making unlawful changes in vehicle headlights : Impact of Surajya Abhiyan’s complaint

Mumbai – The standard intensity of the vehicle headlights has been laid down by the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989. However, some drivers disregard the rule and prefer headlights which cause discomfort to the eyes. Due to extra powerful lights, many road accidents have taken place in Maharashtra. Many have lost their lives. ‘Surajya Abhiyan’ took the issue seriously and lodged a complaint with the State Transport Commissioner. Taking a note of the complaint, on 23rd August, the Transport Commissioner directed all the regional and sub-regional transport officers of Maharashtra through a circular to submit a report regarding vehicles.

If drivers are found guilty, action can be taken against them and public awareness created. This information was provided by Mr Abhishek Murukate (Maharashtra State Coordinator of ‘Surajya Abhiyan’ – a Hindu Janajagruti Samiti initiative). Some important points are :

1. For safety reasons, the headlights of a vehicle should not be blinding for the drivers coming from the opposite direction. Hence, amendments were made in the year 2005 in the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989. ‘Surajya Abhiyan’ volunteers noticed that the rules were not being followed, and hence, lodged a complaint regarding this with the Transport Commissioner.

2. “In fact, we had to lodge this complaint because we found that though there is a provision for punishing the guilty in this regard, it is not being taken seriously by the Transport Department. The Commissioner should not stop at directing the regional and sub-regional authorities. He must get it implemented. This will save many lives. If there are no visible results after this complaint, we will go to Court”, warned Mr Abhishek Murukate.
