Case of expressing displeasure with court’s stance on private doctors
New Delhi – Indian Medical Association (IMA) president R V Asokan told the Supreme Court on Tuesday his unconditional apology to the apex court over his ” damaging” statements, where he had answered queries about Patanjali Ayurveda Ltd’s misleading
advertisements case, has been published in various publications. The IMA’s counsel told a bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Sandeep Mehta that his unconditional apology has been published in the association’s monthly publication, on the IMA’s website.
1. In the case of ‘Patanjali Ayurveda Limited’ circulating alleged misleading advertisements about its products, ‘IMA’ had filed a petition in the Supreme Court.
2. During the hearing of this case, Baba Ramdev had apologised as per the order of the Supreme Court in the case of airing misleading advertisements. After that, the Supreme Court observed that the IMA also needs to ‘set its own house in order’. At that time, the court
had commented on the unethical practices of private doctors.
3. In an interview given to the news agency ‘PTI’, Dr Asokan expressed his displeasure about the stand taken by the Supreme Court regarding private doctors and said that ‘the stand taken by the court does not suit its reputation’. The court reprimanded him for this and asked him to publicly apologise.
