Varanasi (UP) – River Ganga has left its banks. Compared to June last year, the river Ganga has dropped its level by 15 feet this June. The banks of the River Ganga along with its central part of are being converted into sandbanks. Scientists in this context have said that they cannot believe it after seeing all this.

For the first time, it has been observed that sand and silt are deposited on the inhabited ghats of the River Ganga. This situation has arisen at more than 40 ghats of River Ganga in Varanasi. Sand and silt have reached from Scindia Ghat, Sakka Ghat, Lalita Ghat to Dashashwamedh Ghat and Pandey Ghat. Assi Ghat is already covered with sand and soil. Sand and mud accumulate excessively at Dashashwamedh Ghat. Tourists and devotees who visit the place descend the steps of the ghat and take photographs standing on the sand and mud.

Boaters also have to cross the sand. A 1.5 km wide sand pile has accumulated in front of Dashashwamedh Ghat. Between Gaighat and Raj Ghat, a 2 km wide sand pile has been created. Long strips of sand have formed in the middle of the Ganga in front of the ghats. The availability of water here has extremely depleted.

Scientists say that this situation has arisen because the continuous flow of the River Ganga has been stopped. The dams are harming the river and the Government’s efforts to clean the river are failing.

Prof. Dr. BD Tripathi of Banaras Hindu University’s Ganga Research Center said that the sewage treatment plant has been constructed and all works are in progress; But the water level of River Ganga has decreased. As there is no water in the River Ganga, sewage from the drains is falling into it. Hence the pollution here is increasing.
