New Delhi – ISRO has said, that since 1984, more than 27% of glacial lakes in the Himalayas have expanded significantly. Of these 676 lakes, 130 are in India. Satellite imagery has revealed this information.
Of the 2,431 lakes larger than 10 hectares, 676 have expanded significantly since 1984. Of these, 601 lakes have expanded twice their size and the remaining have expanded by one and a half times.
Editorial Perspective
Floods that would arise if these glacial lakes burst, could be calamitous. Considering this, the Government should start finding a solution from now itself. |
