Chennai – A joint team comprising the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Delhi Police apprehended Jaffer Sadiq, a prominent leader of the Tamil Nadu DMK Party and a film producer, in Delhi. Sadiq had been evading authorities since the previous month, maintaining a clandestine presence in various cities including Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur. His arrest promptly followed receipt of confidential intelligence indicating his presence in Delhi. Sadiq stands accused of orchestrating an international drug trafficking enterprise valued at Rs 2,000 crore, with operations extending to countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and within India. During interrogation, Sadiq asserted his position as the deputy organiser of the DMK’s NRI wing for Chennai District-West. His involvement came to light following the apprehension of three members of his syndicate the previous month, leading to his expulsion from the DMK party. Further investigation uncovered that Sadiq had provided Rs 7 lakh to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s son, State Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. Of this amount, Rs 5 lakh purportedly contributed to flood relief efforts, while Rs 2 lakh was allocated to the party’s funds. The sources through which Sadiq amassed these funds are presently under scrutiny. According to the investigative authorities, Udhayanidhi Stalin may also be summoned for questioning in connection with this case.

3. Authorities conducted a raid on Sadiq’s warehouse situated in the Basai Darapur area of Delhi, resulting in the seizure of 50 kg of pseudoephedrine, a controlled substance. This operation was executed based on intelligence provided by authorities in Australia and New Zealand. The warehouse served as a hub for the exportation of large quantities of pseudoephedrine from India, utilising coconut powder and multigrain food powder as concealment methods.
4. The NCB disclosed that proceeds from the drug trade were invested by Jaffer Sadiq into various sectors including film production, construction, and other businesses. Utilising these funds, Sadiq has produced the Tamil film ‘Mangai,’ with its trailer already released to the public. Additionally, he has also built a hotel in Chennai.
Sadiq’s network should be exposed and busted
K Annamalai, BJP State President of Tamil Nadu, emphasised that, “With many other DMK leaders moving closely with Jaffer Sadiq in the last 3 years, it is important to understand how Jaffer Sadiq acted as their conduit for money laundering. We request the law enforcement authorities to comb deeply and ensure that Jaffer Sadiq’s network is exposed and busted to ensure the free flow of drugs in TN under the DMK regime is curtailed.”
Sadiq even received gifts from the Director General of Police – AIADMKAIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said that, “Chief Minister M K Stalin owes an explanation to the people on how Jaffer Sadiq gained access to a senior Police officer. Jaffer became close to the DMK leadership and even received gifts from the Director General of Police. (This is akin to proverb ‘fence eating the crop.’ This allegation should also be thoroughly investigated, and the truth should be revealed to the public – Editor) This is very unfortunate and anguishing and needs to be strongly condemned.” |
