New rules of the National Medical Council
New Delhi – The National Medical Commission (NMC) has made stricter rules. No Doctor will be able to participate in any seminar, workshop, etc. organised by the Pharmaceutical companies. If a Doctor participates in them, his/her licence will be suspended for 3 months.
1. Section 35 of the Medical Councils rule says that there is a ban on the Doctor or his family accepting any fees or commission from any Pharmaceutical company or its representatives. The new rules also say that it is compulsory for the Doctors to prescribe generic medicines.
2. The Indian Medical Association is opposing these rules. The Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has called for a meeting about this issue.
3. Before this, in 2010 the Medical Council of India had forbidden the Doctors or their families from accepting gifts or travel benefits etc. from the Pharmaceutical companies.
