Supreme Court dismisses the bail plea of Muslims sentenced to life imprisonment

Godhra violence case

New Delhi – On the 27th of February 2002, bogies of Sabarmati Express were set on fire. In this case, Supreme Court rejected the bail plea by the guilty Shaukat Yusuf, Bilal Abdulla and Siddiqui. Supreme Court dismissed the plea saying, this crime was extremely serious. After the Sabarmati Express bogies were gutted, riots had broken out in various parts of Gujrat.

A Muslim mob threw a highly inflammable substance to cause fire on a bogie of Sabarmati Express arriving from Ayodhya. The bogie was full of karsevaks and 59 people, including children and women, had died in this bogie. In this case, Special Court had sentenced the criminals to life imprisonment and Gujrat High Court had upheld the sentence. After this, the guilty submitted an appeal to the Supreme Court which is still pending. Challenging the Gujarat High Court decision, the Supreme Court has said that the plea would be submitted to the appropriate Bench. Earlier, on 21st April 2002 Supreme Court granted bail to eight guilty persons who were sentenced to life imprisonment in the same case.
