Five Muslim majority Constituencies reserved for Scheduled Castes and Tribes in Assam

  • Reorganisation of Voter Unions in the State of Assam
  • Strong Opposition Shown by religious fanatic Muslims
  • Increase in the number of Voter Unions satisfies the Bodo Community’s Organisations

Guwahati (Assam) – The National Election Commission has delimited the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly Voter Unions in Assam. This includes a total of 14 Lok Sabha and 126 Legislative Assembly Voter Unions in the State. Among these, the names of 1 Lok Sabha and 19 Legislative Assembly constituencies have also changed. In this context, the five Muslim majority constituencies in the Legislative Assembly will now be reserved for Scheduled Castes and Tribes instead of Muslim candidates. This means that no Muslim candidate will be elected as a ‘representative’. Consequently, religious fanatic Muslims here are agitated. On the other hand, the number of Legislative Assembly constituencies in Bodo land has been increased from 11 to 15. This increased representation for the Bodo community has led to satisfaction being expressed by their organisations. At the Panchayat and urban levels, there have been no changes in the voting Districts.

The Election Commission has announced that a total of 19 Legislative Assembly and 2 Lok Sabha Voter Unions in the State have been reserved for Scheduled Tribes. Also, 1 Lok Sabha and 9 Legislative Assembly constituencies will be reserved for Scheduled Castes. Earlier, 16 Legislative Assembly and 8 Lok Sabha Voter Unions were reserved for Scheduled Tribes.

In this revision, some constituencies have been renamed. The most notable ones are Manakachar to BirsingJarua, South Salmara to Manakachar, Gobardhana to Manas, and Patharkandi from South Karimganj.

According to the provided report, a total of 1,200 applications were considered. After 1976, such redistricting of Voter Unions has occurred for the first time.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam mentioned that the demands made by the people and given by the State Government have been accepted through this redistricting. BJP’s announcement during the 2021 election campaign also indicated redistricting. We have fulfilled our promise.

The various organisations working for the Bodo community in Assam, such as ‘Nikhil Bodo Vidhyarthi Sanstha,’ ‘Bodo Jatiya Parishad,’ ‘Bodo Sahitya Sabha,’ ‘Bodo Kshetriya Parishad,’ ‘Dularai Bodo Harimu Afad,’ ‘Dularai Batho Mahasabha,’ and ‘Bodo Mahila Kalyan Parishad,’ expressed their happiness unitedly through the Press Council about this redistricting.

Editorial Viewpoint

In Assam, the number of intruders is higher. Therefore, religious fanatic Muslims are attempting to bring up candidates of their choice through Muslim Majority seats. This had a direct impact on the State’s security. Due to the reorganisation of constituencies, this problem will deplete, and that is why religious fanatic Muslims are throwing tantrums.
