India should stop interfering in our affairs

An anti-India statement by Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party

Bangladesh’s textile industry will be the worst affected by increasing attacks on minorities, especially Hindus.

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – “Bangladesh is an independent country, and its people are intelligent enough to know who is capable of what. They do not require advice from outside. (If they are so capable, why did they require India and the Indian Army’s help in 1971 ? Why didn’t they use their intellect to face the Pakistani Army and achieve independence on their own ? – Editor) If necessary, we can bring in advisors from abroad. Citizens of any independent country do not like interference from another country in their internal matters,” said Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, a leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) while criticising India. He was speaking while paying homage at the tomb of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman. When questioned by journalists about Bangladesh’s relationship with India, Roy accused India of interfering in the country’s internal affairs.

Gayeshwar Chandra Roy further commented,

1. In recent years, we have witnessed India’s dominance. For instance, appointments of managing directors in Bangladeshi banks cannot happen without approval from the Indian Government. Decisions about who will be the Chief Justice, members of parliament, or ministers are all influenced by India.

2. India is our neighbouring country, and if our friendship is based on mutual interests and respect, it will benefit both countries and ensure a positive future.

3. Bilateral relations should be between nations, not driven by individuals or political parties. If India realises this, it will undoubtedly adopt the right approach to strengthen ties with Bangladesh.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Instead of advising India on what it should or should not do, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy should first address the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Hindus by religious fanatic Muslims in his country and take concrete steps to stop it.
  • Roy’s statement reflects either his ideological indoctrination or that he has been compelled to make such remarks.
