(‘Tripunda’ means 3 horizontal lines drawn with three fingers, on the forehead with sandalwood or holy ash. It has the abode of 27 Deities.)
Meerut (Uttar Pradesh) – A girl has accused Subhash Inter College of expelling her from the college for applying ‘Tripunda Tilak’ on her forehead and wearing ‘Rudraksha beads’ on her wrist. The school Administration claimed that the student was asked to draw ‘Tripunda Tilak’ in small size, but she refused to do so.
The girl said that the principal of the college scolded her even after she started applying ‘Tripunda Tilak’ in small size and she was expelled from the school. She was dismissed from the school because she used to create awareness among the other students about the films like ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘The Kerala Story’. She applies ‘Tripunda Tilak’ only in the month of ‘Shravan’.
The student’s mother said that she was called to the college when she explained to them about the tradition of applying ‘Tripunda Tilak’ but the principal didn’t listen to her, and she was asked to leave.

The principal Bhawana Chauhan said in this regard that the student was not expelled because she came with ‘Tripunda Tilak’. She used to apply ‘Tripunda Tilak’ on the whole forehead; therefore, she was asked to keep it small, but she refused to do so. The school authorities explained to her, the reasons for the same on many occasions. Her parents were also told that if one student started doing such a thing, students from other religions would also demand permission to follow traditions as per their religion, which could spoil the atmosphere in the college.

Omkar Shukla, the regional Director-Joint Education said, no student can be deprived of education based on matters related to religion. If the student is stopped because of applying ‘Tripunda Tilak’, it was not proper. An inquiry is going on into this incident and action will be taken, later.
Editorial Viewpoint
Hindu girls and boys do not apply ‘kumkum’ or ‘tilak’ on their forehead but if some students do and schools or colleges take such action, it is a conspiracy to deliberately eliminate the traditions followed in Hindu Dharma. |
