Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar –  Dr J L Meena,  a member of the National Medical Commission (NMC)’s medical assessment and rating board, has taken an important decision. NMC conducts a survey before opening any new Government medical college and hospital. At such time, the other Government medical colleges should not temporarily transfer their professors to such new medical colleges, is the circular issued by NMC. In its order, Sambhaji Nagar Bench of the High Court had asked to impose permanent restrictions on the temporary transfers of professors from medical colleges. Consequently, NMC has issued such a circular to all medical institutions. In a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by MIM’s MP Imtiaz Jaleel, the High Court passed the above verdict. It was argued before the Court that doctors from Sambhaji Nagar and other Districts were temporarily transferred to show that there would be adequate manpower to start a proposed Government medical college and hospital. The Bench of Justice Ravindra V Ghuge and Justice Sanjay A Deshmukh imposed permanent restrictions on the temporary appointments of doctors at the time of inspection by NMC, done only for the purpose of starting a new Government medical college and hospital in Maharashtra.

Doctors happy with the decision

Temporary transfers of doctors working in different Government medical colleges were undergoing mental and financial stress for many years. The above decision of NMC has made doctors happy and they have welcomed this decision. Many doctors have also thanked MP Jaleel in this context.
