Maharashtra ranks 11th in India Justice Report

Mumbai – Maharashtra ranks 11th in the disposal of Court cases. Karnataka ranks first, while Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of pending cases revealed in the third edition of India Justice Report (IJR) published by the Tata Trust based on the study of the judicial process in 18 States of the country.

According to the report,

1. The vacancy of judges in High Courts stands at 30 percent.

2. Not even 25 percent of the sanctioned posts in District Courts in 10 States and Union Territories have not been filled. Out of this, 57.7 percent of vacancies are in Puducherry, 48.5 percent in Meghalaya and 39 percent vacancies in District Courts in Haryana.

3. In Uttar Pradesh, resolving cases takes more than 11 years. In West Bengal, it is 9 years and 9 months. High and lower Courts have a higher rate of case disposal.

4. Budgetary provision for legal aid in States is increasing.

5. The rate of conducting cases through video conferencing has increased from 60 percent last year to 84 percent this year.

6. More than two-thirds of prisoners serving sentences in prisons remain behind bars due to delays in delivering judgment results.
