216 posts of judges in the country’s High Courts are vacant

New Delhi – The Union Minister of Law & Justice Kiren Rijiju informed the Rajya Sabha that 216 posts of judges in the High Courts of the country have not yet been recommended by the High Court Collegium. The Collegium was developed by order of the Supreme Court. Appointments and transfers of judges are handled by it.

1. In the High Courts, 1,114 judges have been appointed. Among these, only 780 posts are filled, while 334 are vacant. Rijiju explained that 118 recommendations of the High Court Collegium for these recruitments in the High Courts are in phased stages and the Government has not yet received recommendations for the remaining 216 vacancies.
2. Kiren Rijiju said that the Government is trying to fill the posts of judges in the High Court. A proposal has been sent to fill up these posts and it has been called upon to consider suitable candidates from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Minorities, and Women. The Government has not yet received the Collegium’s recommendations for 216 vacancies. There is no vacancy in the Supreme Court at present.
