No penalty for traffic violations during the Diwali Week : Gujarat Home Minister

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) – No penalty for breaking traffic rules will be charged from 21 to 27 October. I have taken this decision after the concurrence of the Chief Minister; this does not mean that you should not obey the traffic rules. The Gujarat State Home Minister Harsh Singhvi declared that if you commit a mistake or break a rule you will not have to pay any penalty. He was speaking at a program. There will be elections soon in the State. The opposition parties are saying that these types of announcements are being made because of the elections.

Alcohol is banned in Gujarat. The penalty here for drunken driving is to pay Rs 10,000 or imprisonment for 6 months. And Rs 25,000 fine, or imprisonment for 3 years is the penalty for a minor driving a vehicle. Breaking the traffic signal attracts a penalty from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000.

Jayant Singh Chaudhari Chief of Rashtriya Lok Dal alleged, that the State’s BJP Government was endangering the lives of the people. The Election Commission is delaying announcing the dates of the elections, to make it possible for the Government to make such announcements.

Editorial viewpoint

Traffic Rules are for protecting people and vehicles. Will anyone think that accidents could increase and people might lose their lives because of withdrawing the penalty at the height of the festival season ?
