Bengaluru (Karnataka)  – The Shrimadbhagavadgita will be taught in schools in Karnataka from December as a part of moral education. This move is being opposed by Muslims. They said ‘If the Gita is being taught, why not the Quran ?’ to which the education minister of Karnataka B.C Nagesh said “The Quran is a religious book, whereas the Gita is not. The Gita does mention anything about worshipping God or religious practice. It imparts knowledge about ethics, which will motivate students.”

1. Education Minister Nagesh further said that ‘Freedom fighters were inspired to fight thanks to the Bhagavadgita. We will not teach the Gita as a separate subject, hence we will include it in moral science. The Government had already constituted a committee for this and as per its recommendations, the Gita will be taught from December.

2. Education Minister Nagesh also said that “Attempts are being made to correct errors in textbooks. One such example would be the mention of ‘Baba Budangiri’ in Chikmagalur. Now it has been renamed ‘Inam Dattatreya Peeth’. (Hindus feel that the Dattatreya Peeth which has been encroached on by Muslims should be returned back to the Hindus! – Editor.)

BJP Questions why the Gita is not being taught as a regular subject

The BJP Government in Karnataka had earlier announced that the Gita would be taught as a separate subject in schools, but now the very same BJP has raised a question about teaching it under moral science. BJP leaders Pranesh M.K. And N. Ravikumar asked, Why is the Government going away from its promise when no one has opposed teaching the Gita ? What is the problem with the Government ? Is the Government backing down ?
