Chinese mobile phones costing less than Rs 12,000 likely to be banned

New Delhi – India is planning to ban Chinese smartphones. The Union Government may soon ban Chinese smartphones priced below Rs 12,000 in India. According to a business company Bloomberg, the Centre has taken this decision to encourage domestic companies like Lava and Micromax. Due to this decision, Chinese establishments like Xiaomi, Vivo, Redmi and Realme will be affected.

2. According to a report, smartphones priced below $150 (Rs 12,000) account for one-third of the smartphone business in India. Chinese companies account for almost 80% of it. Xiaomi will be hit the hardest as 66% of its handsets are priced or below Rs 12,000.

3. If restrictions are imposed on Chinese mobile phone sets, mobile phone companies like Samsung and Apple will benefit.

Economic sanctions imposed by India on China in the past few years

  • In the year 2020, the Government banned 60 Chinese apps. So far, a total of 349 Chinese apps have been banned.
  • In the past few weeks, India raided the offices of Chinese companies like Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi. It is alleged that Vivo Mobile India Private Limited has defrauded customs duty of Rs 2,217 crores.
