Ahmedabad (Gujarat) – In the 2002 riots of Gujarat, the crime branch of Ahmedabad Police arrested the suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt who was already in Palanpur jail, undergoing a sentence in connection with a case, from where he was transferred to Ahmedabad Police. He has been arrested for his attempts to implicate innocent people in the Gujarat riots case. The so-called human rights activist Teesta Setalvad and former Gujarat Director-General of Police R. B. Sreekumar have already been arrested in this context.

1. The special investigation team (SIT) set up to investigate these riots, had declared 69 persons as innocents including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
2. The petition filed against this in the Supreme Court has also been dismissed by the Court.
3. After Setalvad, Sreekumar, Bhatt is the third person now detained in the case.
4. Cases have been filed against these three persons under clause 468 (committing forgery with the intention of cheating), clause 471 (Use of documents made fraudulently), and clause 194 (fabricating false evidence).
