Pakistan jails Sajid Mir, mastermind of Mumbai attacks

Pakistan had claimed in the past that Mir was dead !

New Delhi – Sajid Mir, the mastermind of the 26/11 jihadi terrorist attack on Mumbai, has been arrested in Pakistan. The United States had declared Mir a “most wanted terrorist” on charges of conspiracy to injure the property of a foreign Government, providing material support to terrorists, killing a citizen outside of the US and aiding and abetting, and bombing places of public use. Of the 166 people killed in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, six were Americans. The United States has offered a bounty of USD five million (₹54.77 Crore) on Mir’s head for information leading to his capture. Pakistan has always denied that Sajid Mir is in its country. Not only that, but Pakistan had also claimed that he was dead.

1. An anti-terrorism Court in Lahore early this month had handed down a 15 and a half years jail term to Sajid Mir. He has also been imposed a fine of more than Rs 4 lakh. Sajid Mir, 45, has been in the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore since his arrest in April.

2. The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Pakistan’s Punjab Police, which often issues convictions of the suspects in such cases and informs the media, did not notify Mir’s conviction. The media was not even aware of the sentence and the Court proceedings, because it was done in a closed room inside the prison. The media was not allowed to go there.

3. Mir reportedly visited India in 2005 using a fake passport with a fake name.
