Thousands of tonnes of meat is procured by the Army from these centres every year. Some Army officers observed that Halal meat is given to the soldiers. Many soldiers expressed their displeasure on hearing this. So, the Army officers wrote to the Ministers and Governors of the States of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, demanding in writing whether the meat served to the soldiers is ‘halal’ or ‘Jhatka’. Response to the letter is yet to be received. In ‘Jhatka’ the animals are killed in one stroke, so the animal’s agony is less. Hindus consume this type of meat.
What is ‘Halal’ meat?
To get halal meat, a swipe with a sharp blade is made across the animal’s neck, cutting the major veins and the animal is left to bleed to death. While sacrificing these animals, its face is kept in the direction of Mecca.
