Will move to Court against Government appointing priests in Tamil Nadu Temples : Dr. Subramanian Swamy

Editorial comment

  • Apart from Dr. Swamy, none of the Hindu MP seems to be revolting for Hindu Temples. It is a shame that Hindus elect such inactive leaders who appear to have no pride in their Dharma.

New Delhi – The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kalagham (DMK) party in Tamil Nadu is officially appointing non-Bhramins as Temple priests. It was opposed by senior BJP leader and MP Dr. Subramanian Swamy. Currently, the Court has stayed the appointments. Dr. Subramanian Swamy criticising the ruling DMK party tweeted, ‘M.K.Stalin, I thought, would not repeat his father’s mistakes on the issue of Temples. MK got a snub from Supreme Court in my Sabhanayagar Natraj Temple case of 2014. In the recent DMK meddling with Temple priests postings, it has become necessary for me to go to Court too’.

What is the case of Sabhanayagar Natraj Temple ?

Dikshit (priests) of the 1,500-years-old Sabhanayagar Natraj Temple (Chidambaram Nataraja Temple) have been fighting for their religious rights for the last 100 years. Dikshit fought a long legal battle against the then Madras provincial Government and the post-Independence Tamil Nadu Government demanding that the management of the Temple should be in the hands of the devotees. The Dikshit finally won the battle in Supreme Court in 2014. The Apex Court had ruled against the Tamil Nadu Government and given the responsibility of the Temple to Dikshit. Senior BJP leader and MP Dr. Subramanyam Swamy played a pivotal role in it.
