22.5 kg silver missing from the decorative carvings in Saptashrungi Devi Temple, Nashik

Criminal cases filed against the then Chairman, Trustee and responsible officers

Nashik, Maharashtra – The Saptashrungi Devi Temple on the Hill is a seat of worship for millions of devotees. The silver worth 22.5 kgs has been lost from the decorative carvings of the temple. It has been observed in the inquiry conducted by the regional commissioner’s office that during the absence of manager Sudarshan Dahatonde, the trustees have removed the silver from the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. A criminal case has been filed against the then chairman, trustees and the responsible officers in the matter. Mr Vithoba Dyandyan, a social activist, has demanded from the District Collector that the full amount of the lost silver, with interest, be collected from the guilty. He has also filed a complaint with the regional commissioner in this context.

1. According to the previous records, about 406 kg of silver was used for the carvings, but in the actual testing, it was found that only 383 kg of silver had been used.

2. The additional Commissioner (Revenue), Mr Jitendra Wagh, has ordered an inquiry. Similarly, the District Collector’s office, Assistant District Collector (Kalwan), and Tehsildar (Kalwan) have also ordered an in-depth inquiry into the matter along with the report. Mr Dyandyan had demanded the filing of a criminal case.

3. The case of black marketing by trustees in the VIP ‘Darshan’ scam at Shrikshetra Trimbakeshwar Devasthan was recently exposed. Malpractices by the then trustees at Saptashrungi will also be unearthed if a similar inquiry is conducted as in the case of Trimbakeshwar. The former trustees could be involved in the wrong practices, which can be exposed in the inquiry.

4. On 15.09.2021, the Saptashrungi Trust passed a resolution to remove the silver from decorative carvings during the day, but the silver from the sanctum sanctorum was removed at night on the next day in the absence of an evaluator. A letter was given by Mr Dahatonde, the manager of the trust, to the chairman and the Charity Commissioner, which was taken as proof. The trustees were, however, displeased about it, and they suspended Dahatonde by hatching a conspiracy.

Demand to expose the truth

The temple silver is the legacy of devotees’ faith. If the people responsible for its protection are misappropriating it, it is dangerous for society. Truth should be exposed in this case – Vithoba Dyandyan, a social activist

Editorial Perspective

  • Adverse effects of Government managing the temples !
  • Those involved in misappropriating silver should be sentenced to life imprisonment.  Hindus are unaware of such incidents; they don’t feel bad even if they come to know about them. There is, therefore, rise in such incidents causing harm to Dharma. Hindus need to come forward to protect their temples.
