₹1 crore cash and jewellery worth ₹64 crore seized

ED raids 8 locations in Kolkata

Kolkata (Bengal) – Ahead of the first phase of the Assembly elections scheduled on 23 April, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out a major operation in the city. ED officials conducted simultaneous raids at 8 locations. The action was taken in connection with an ongoing money laundering case against notorious criminal Biswajit Poddar alias ‘Sona Pappu’, J S Kamdar and others.

1.  During the raids, approximately ₹1.47 crore in cash, gold and silver jewellery worth ₹67.64 crore, important documents, digital devices, and a four-wheeler were seized.

2.  During a raid at a building on Fern Road, a US-made pistol was recovered. It has been handed over to the Bengal Police for further action.

3.  In view of the elections, the Police have registered First Information Reports against several individuals. Serious charges such as rioting, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy, and violation of the Arms Act have been invoked.

4.  Investigation revealed that Biswajit Poddar alias ‘Sona Pappu’ and his associates were amassing large amounts of money through organised crime, including extortion, illegal land grabbing, and unauthorised construction activities.

5.  Despite being summoned by the ED, Biswajit Poddar has not yet appeared for questioning and is currently absconding.
