Establishment of the Maharashtra State River Rejuvenation Authority to ensure pollution-free rivers !

Mumbai – The Government of Maharashtra has established the Maharashtra State River Rejuvenation Authority to ensure pollution-free rivers across the state. This significant decision was taken during the Cabinet meeting held on April 1 under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The Authority will implement rejuvenation projects across 54 identified polluted river stretches in the state. It will be administered by the Department of Environment and Climate Change.

According to a report published by the Central Pollution Control Board in 2025, there are 296 polluted river stretches across the country, of which the highest number—54—are located in Maharashtra. These include rivers such as the Mithi, Kalu, Mula, Mula-Mutha, Mutha, Bhima, Pavana, Nag, Chandrabhaga, and Panchganga. The Authority will act as the nodal agency to drive efforts towards making these rivers pollution-free.

The Authority will undertake the rejuvenation of polluted river stretches in a phased manner, based on defined priorities. It will implement measures related to sewage treatment and industrial effluent management, prevent encroachments, and recommend the demarcation of riverbank zones. An estimated fund of ₹2,000 crore will be mobilized through the Pollution Control Board for this initiative, along with an approved allocation of ₹100 crore from the State Government.

The Authority will work towards reducing river pollution across the state and promoting river conservation and rejuvenation. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will serve as the Chairperson of the Authority, while the Minister for Environment and Climate Change will be the Vice-Chairperson. The Finance Minister, Urban Development Minister, Water Resources Minister, Industries Minister, and the Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj will serve as members.

Editorial Perspective

Along with making rivers pollution-free, strict punitive action must be taken against those responsible for polluting them; only then can Rivers’ sanctity be preserved !
