Mumbai, March 10 – The State Government has taken two significant decisions for the convenience of women government employees in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and to honour motherhood. Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar announced in the Legislative Council on March 10 that women employees will be granted the facility of ‘early arrival and early departure’ from office, along with 180 days of maternity leave. Responding to a special discussion held in the Legislative Council on the occasion of International Women’s Day, she stated that the government is committed to the overall development and welfare of women.
‘Come Early-Go Early’ concept
Considering the heavy commuting rush in Mumbai and the difficulties faced by women during travel, the Deputy Chief Minister announced this initiative. Under the scheme, women employees who report to work between 9:15 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. and begin work earlier by a certain number of minutes will be allowed to leave the office earlier by the same number of minutes in the evening, up to a maximum of 30 minutes. The objective is to avoid inconvenience during peak travel hours and enable women employees to spend more time fulfilling their family responsibilities.
Women employees will now be entitled to 180 days (six months) of maternity leave, in line with the provisions available to employees of the Union Government. Notably, the State Government has also decided that after maternity leave, women employees may avail themselves of up to one year of half-pay leave without requiring a medical certificate, if necessary. “The primary aim of this decision is to ensure that women can maintain a balance between family responsibilities and public service while upholding the dignity of motherhood,” said Sunetra Pawar.
