Supreme Court responds to allegations of violation of its orders in Bengal

New Delhi – The Supreme Court of India has clarified that its directions regarding the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll in West Bengal are unequivocal and must be strictly followed. The Court stated that neither the Election Commission nor the State Government can go beyond the directives issued by it. It emphasised that it has clearly specified which documents are required to be verified in the course of the revision process.
Appearing for West Bengal, senior advocate Kapil Sibal informed the Bench that the Election Commission had allegedly circulated instructions to judicial officers behind the back of the Court. He submitted that a training policy outlining what documents should be accepted and what should be rejected during scrutiny had been issued to them.
In response, the Court reiterated that the judicial officers appointed for this process in the State would take decisions in accordance with law and in strict compliance with its binding directions. The Bench firmly observed that it would not tolerate any deviation from its orders and that such actions must cease immediately. It added that it is fully aware of its judicial authority and that no action or submission can undermine it.
