Global import tariffs annulled due to Indian-origin advocate Neal Katyal’s legal battle

Washington (America) – The decision of President Donald Trump to impose global import tariffs on international trade was annulled after a legal challenge in the Supreme Court of the United States led by Indian-origin advocate Neal Katyal. Trump had invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose the tariffs. Neal Katyal challenged this action before the court.

After the verdict, Katyal stated, “The President is powerful, but our Constitution is more powerful.”

Neal Katyal’s arguments in court

1. The 1977 IEEPA does not contain any mention of the words ‘import duty’ or ‘tax’.

2. Under the US Constitution, the authority to levy taxes and regulate commerce rests solely with Congress, not with the President.
