Statement by US Assistant Secretary of State Paul Kapur

Washington DC (USA) – The Trump administration of the United States has stated that India is an essential partner in South Asia to respond to China. US Assistant Secretary of State Paul Kapur expressed this view before the South and Central Asia Subcommittee of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He was asked, “How can India assist the United States in dealing with China’s growing assertiveness?” In response, Kapur said, “India progressing independently and standing on its own strength will complement America’s strategic interests. A strong India limits China’s ability to emerge as a dominant power in the Indo-Pacific region.”
🇺🇸 “India’s support is essential to counter China.”

Interesting shift in tone. 🤔Let’s not forget 🇮🇳 – during the 1971 war, it was the very same United States that allegedly encouraged China to attack India. 📜⚠️… https://t.co/ubBbC6GLzd pic.twitter.com/92OAsP6CgN

Speaking about China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative, Kapur stated that India’s economic growth and independent defence development reduce China’s capacity to expand its influence. He also noted that India is reducing its oil purchases from Russia and is sourcing oil from various suppliers. There is significant potential for India to purchase oil from the United States.
