Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Narges Mohammadi Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison in Iran

Accused of Propaganda Against the State

Tehran (Iran) — A court in Iran has sentenced Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist Narges Mohammadi to more than seven years in prison on charges of spreading propaganda against the state. In addition to the prison term, she has been given two years of internal exile and a travel ban. Mohammadi is currently on a hunger strike.

She had been a prominent supporter of the protests that erupted in 2022 following the custodial death of Mahsa Amini, who had opposed compulsory hijab laws. Notably, Mohammadi had already been serving a 13-year sentence and was temporarily released on health grounds at the time.

Narges Mohammadi has been campaigning for human rights in Iran for the past 30 years and has faced repeated imprisonment during this period. She has been arrested 13 times so far. When she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, she was lodged in Tehran’s Evin Prison. Her children, who reside in Paris, accepted the award on her behalf.

She is the second Iranian woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. The award was conferred upon her for her fight against oppression of women in Iran and mistreatment of political prisoners. She has also been a vocal critic of the death penalty in Iran.

In Iran, speaking about public repression leads to punishment; yet in India, many who defame the country abroad face no consequences !
