Christian Organisation Files Petition Against Anti-Conversion Laws

Supreme Court Seeks Response from the Centre and 12 State Governments

New Delhi — The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Central Government and the governments of 12 states regarding anti-conversion laws in force in those states. The Court has directed them to file their responses within four weeks. The notice has been issued on a Public Interest Litigation filed by the Christian organisation ‘National Council of Churches in India’, which has claimed that these laws violate individual religious freedom and the right to personal choice.

The Court has also directed that this new petition be tagged with similar matters already pending, so that all related issues can be heard together by a three-judge bench. The 12 states to which notices have been issued include Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka.

Editorial Perspective

Is it the modus operandi of Christian organisations to convert Hindus by allurements and then approach courts to oppose laws framed against such conversions ? Such organisations should be banned in India !
