Baghpat (Uttar Pradesh): Religious slogans raised during madarasa-led Republic Day procession

Baghpat (Uttar Pradesh) – A video that surfaced on social media shows children raising religious slogans during a Republic Day procession organised by a madarasa in Gauna village. The incident has drawn attention as Republic Day is a national occasion associated with constitutional values, civic unity, and collective national identity.

Following the circulation of the video, several Hindu organisations approached the Baghpat police, demanding strict action. They have argued that the use of overtly religious slogans during a national celebration is inappropriate and undermines the spirit of the occasion. The organisations have called for a detailed inquiry into how and why the procession was conducted in this manner.

The police have stated that the video is under examination and that further action will be taken after verifying the facts.

Editorial Perspectives

  • This brings into focus broader concerns about the nature of ideological instructions imparted to children in madarasas, as children tend to reproduce the values and messages they are exposed to from an early age. This raises serious questions about whether such institutions align with the principles of constitutional citizenship.
  • There is also concern that emphasising religious identity during national events sends a message that faith takes precedence over the nation. If such narratives continue unchecked, they may gradually nurture mindset sympathetic to radical ideological goals, including concepts such as ‘Ghazwa-e-Hind’, which envisage the transformation of India into an Islamic state.
