Thailand installs idol of Bhagwan Buddha at site where idol of Bhagwan Vishnu was recently removed

Opposition from Cambodia

Bangkok (Thailand) – Amid the ongoing dispute between Thailand and Cambodia, Thailand has now installed an idol of Bhagwan Buddha in the disputed area. Just a few weeks ago, the idol of Bhagwan Vishnu at the same location was removed using a JCB machine. Cambodia has expressed strong displeasure over the latest development, terming it a provocative act. The area where Thailand has installed the idol of Bhagwan Buddha is known as En Ma in Thailand and En Ses in Cambodia. Both countries have been claiming rights over this region for several years.

Background to the removal of Bhagwan Vishnu’s idol

Clashes had taken place between the two countries in November and December 2025 in this very area where the idol has now been installed. Subsequently, the Thai military gained control over the disputed region. At that time, the idol of Bhagwan Vishnu present there was removed with the help of a JCB machine. The Thai military has claimed that the idol was installed at the site by the Cambodian military in 2013, on land that Thailand considers to be within its borders. Therefore, the action was taken. Cambodia, however, has rejected Thailand’s claim. According to the Thai military, the removal was not intended to hurt anyone’s religious sentiments, but was meant to assert control over the area.

Thailand’s stand behind installing Bhagwan Buddha’s idol

Approximately a month later, the Thai government has now installed an idol of Bhagwan Buddha at the same site. The military clarified that the act is purely religious in nature and its objective is to boost the morale of local citizens. There is no intention to insult any religion or country through this act. Thailand has stated that the step was taken under religious freedom and has accused Cambodia of misinterpreting the issue.

Strong reaction from Cambodia

Cambodia has stated that this act goes against the spirit of ceasefire. Cambodian government spokesperson Kim Chanpanha said that the idol was erected within Cambodian territory. He said that Cambodia strongly condemns any harm caused to ancient temples and religious symbols. These symbols are associated with the faith of both Buddhist and Hindu communities. Such actions weaken the peace process, he added.

India’s position

India has not yet issued any response to these latest developments. However, after the removal of Bhagwan Vishnu’s idol, India had expressed strong reactions. Calling the incident extremely unfortunate, India had stated that such actions hurt the sentiments of devotees across the world. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said, “Hindu and Buddhist Gods are part of a shared cultural heritage. Everyone must respect them. Both countries should exercise restraint.”
