Madhya Pradesh High Court Orders : Deaths Caused by Chinese Kite String to Be Booked as Culpable Homicide

Indore (Madhya Pradesh) — Terming the continued occurrence of fatal incidents involving banned Chinese kite manja (string) as deeply unfortunate, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed that if a death occurs due to Chinese manja, a case of culpable homicide shall be registered against the responsible person under Section 106(1). The Court emphasised that strict action is essential to prevent further loss of life.

Parents to be booked as well

The High Court observed that anyone found selling or using Chinese manja will face direct criminal prosecution. Further, if minors are caught using the banned string, their parents will be held accountable and criminal cases will also be registered against them.

The Court noted that in Indore, three people have died in recent months due to Chinese manja. Several others have sustained serious injuries, and a large number of birds have also died after getting entangled in the lethal string. With Makar Sankranti falling on January 14—a period when kite flying intensifies—the risk of major accidents due to the use of prohibited manja remains high.

Awareness drive underway, says state government

The Madhya Pradesh Government informed the Court that along with enforcing the ban on Chinese manja, a wide-ranging public awareness campaign is being conducted to educate citizens about its harmful effects. Action is being taken to curb illegal sales, and special safety equipment is also being deployed to prevent accidents.

Editorial Perspective

Despite a ban, Chinese manja is freely sold and used, it is a matter of shame for police and administration; action must be taken against them too.
