“We mediated in the India-Pakistan conflict” : China claims

India dismisses the claim

Beijing (China) — During ‘Operation Sindoor’, US President Donald Trump had repeatedly claimed that the ongoing conflict with Pakistan was halted due to US mediation; however, India consistently and firmly rejected those assertions. Now, nearly seven months later, China has made a similar claim that it mediated in the India–Pakistan conflict. India has clearly rejected China’s claim of involvement in the ceasefire decision.

India has repeatedly stated that on 10 May, following direct talks between the military commanders of both the nations, a ceasefire between India and Pakistan was announced for Operation Sindoor. Reiterating its stand, India has rejected such claims earlier and firmly states that no third party is involved in the bilateral mechanism between India and Pakistan. India has consistently and clearly maintained that the ceasefire was agreed upon solely through direct communication between the military leadership of the two countries.

Claim by China’s Foreign Minister

While speaking at a symposium on China’s foreign relations, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the claim that China mediated to secure the India–Pakistan ceasefire. He stated that conflicts and instability have increased significantly across the world and that China has adopted an objective and rational approach to establish sustainable peace. According to Wang Yi, by applying this approach, China has addressed issues such as northern Myanmar, Iran’s nuclear issue, and tensions between Pakistan and India. He added that China has mediated in tensions between Pakistan and India, Palestine–Israel conflict, and disputes between Cambodia and Thailand.

Editorial Perspective

Why did China suddenly ‘wake up’ to this issue after seven months ? Was it asleep all this while, or has China too caught the eccentricity of grabbing credit, much like Donald Trump ?
