8 crore people in Pakistan have psychological illness

Islamabad (Pakistan) – Increasing psychological problems in Pakistan are a matter of concern. According to the data provided to the Parliament by the Ministry of Health, around 8 crore people suffered from depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and other mental health problems.

Reasons – Economic stress, unemployment, rising inflation, etc.

The Government cited economic stress, unemployment, rising inflation and social problems as some of the major reasons behind the rise in anxiety. They opined that due to a lack of psychiatric treatment and awareness of mental health, the problem might increase.

Need for psychiatric treatment

Health experts suggest that mental health is a major public health problem, and urgent measures are needed in earnest. They emphasise increasing the availability of psychiatric treatment, awareness campaigns and professional treatment in primary health centres.

According to the Government and experts, it was not just an individual problem, but was the one that affected a large number of people in society; so psychological health needed priority in the primary health policy.
