External Affairs Minister outlines the framework of India’s assertive foreign policy at the Pune Lit Fest

Pune (Maharashtra) – “There was a time in India when no political party had a clear majority, and politics was conducted through alliances among various parties. Today, the global situation mirrors that reality – no one holds a clear majority. In such an unstable global environment, India must act with great agility and keep only national interest at the centre of its actions. What is beneficial for my country will be my only choice—this is our fundamental principle,” India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar said. He was speaking during a discussion titled “Diplomacy to Discourse” at the Pune Book Festival, organised by the National Book Trust.
Key points highlighted by the External Affairs Minister
1. Whether it was the crisis in Sri Lanka or the period of the COVID-19 pandemic, India fulfilled its moral responsibility by supporting neighbouring countries like members of a family.
2. Engaging with the United States has become difficult, and managing China has become complex. In such a scenario, India is striving to retain Russia’s trust while also positioning Europe as a supportive partner.
3. In a competitive world, India must now raise its voice instead of remaining subdued. It is due to strong leadership that India has today emerged as a ‘global brand’ with a distinct international identity.
4. Young people should not limit themselves to India alone but view the entire world as their field of opportunity. Many countries, including Russia, offer significant opportunities for India.
