Various countries deport 51,000 Pakistani beggars in the past year

Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) – Around 51,000 Pakistani citizens have been deported by various countries this year for begging. Saudi Arabia alone has deported 24,000 Pakistani beggars. 6,000 were deported from the United Arab Emirates, 2,500 from Azerbaijan, and thousands more from other countries on charges of begging. This information came to light during a meeting of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on ‘Overseas Pakistanis and Human Rights.’

1. In May, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said that the problem of begging has become very serious. He explained that this is why it is becoming difficult for Pakistani citizens to get visas to other countries.
2. He said that about 22 million people in Pakistan are involved in begging and earn about 42 billion rupees annually from it.
Most of the beggars caught abroad are Pakistanis
In 2023, the then Foreign Secretary Zulfikar Haider informed a parliamentary committee of Pakistan that about 90% of the beggars caught abroad were Pakistani citizens. These people were found begging in countries like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
