Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Rampant violence has erupted once again in Bangladesh. Sharif Usman Hadi, a youth leader of the ‘Inqilab Mancha’ and a staunch anti-India figure, was injured in a shooting on December 12th. After his death on December 18th while undergoing treatment in Singapore, violence broke out in the Bangladeshi capital that very night. Hadi’s supporters took to the streets and began protesting. Several offices were attacked, and the offices of two daily newspapers were set on fire.

Attempts were also made to kill 28 journalists. Hindus were also attacked. A Hindu youth was burned alive. Following Hadi’s death, a one-day national mourning period was observed in Bangladesh on December 19th. Hadi had participated in the protests against former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In the wake of the violence, the Bangladeshi army and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the tense areas.
On the night of December 18th, the ‘Inqilab Mancha’ called upon Hadi’s supporters to gather in the Shahbag area of Dhaka. Hadi had emerged as a student leader in Bangladesh. The ‘Jatiya Chhatra Shakti’ student organization at Dhaka University held a mourning procession and protested Hadi’s killing. The protesters demanded that Hadi’s killers be punished. During this protest, activists of the organization set fire to the house of Bangladesh’s Home Affairs Advisor, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
Yunus appeals to protesters not to take the law into their own hands
Bangladesh Interim Government Chief Mohammad Yunus has expressed condolences over the death of Osman Hadi. He appealed to the protesters not take the law into their own hands and assured that the killers would be severely punished.
Prothom Alo and Daily Star offices set on fire

The offices of Prothom Alo and Daily Star, two of the most popular newspapers in Bangladesh, were set on fire. Many journalists and citizens were trapped in the building. The protesters first surrounded the building and then set it on fire. Police evacuated the journalists trapped in the building after great efforts. The office was also looted before it was burnt down. Other major buildings were also set on fire.
“I can’t breathe anymore. There is too much smoke here. I am inside,” Daily Star journalist Jaima Islam, who was stranded, posted on Facebook.
The attack prevented the publication of both newspapers on 19th December. Their online service was also almost disrupted.
Attacks on the editors of the New Age
Nurul Kabir, editor of New Age in Dhaka, was attacked by some people. At night, the protesters, vandalizing and arson, reached Kabir’s office and attacked him.
Vandalism of Mujibur Rahman’s residence
Violent protesters also vandalized the residence of former President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League offices were also set on fire. After Hadi’s death, his supporters renamed the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Auditorium at Dhaka University as Shaheed Usman Hadi Hall and have erected boards with this new name.
Journalist shot dead
Journalist Imdadul Haq Milan was shot dead in Khulna, Bangladesh. Another person was injured in the incident and was taken to hospital, Police said. Milan was president of the Shalua Press Club. At the time of the shooting, Milan was sitting at a tea stall in Shalua market drinking tea. At that moment, 4 persons on 2 motorcycles came suddenly, they opened fire and fled from there.
Attack on Indian High Commission at Chittagong
Like in Dhaka, demonstrations were held in many places in Chittagong. A large crowd gathered in front of the residence of the Indian Assistant High Commissioner. They threw bricks at the High Commission. A group of protesters staged a sit-in outside the office and chanted slogans against Hadi’s killing. They also raised ant-Awami League and anti-India slogans. Police said a group of protesters had gathered at the entrance No. 2 of the complex at the same time. Police used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd. The protesters then threw stones and fled. In addition, the house of Mohibul Hassan Chaudhary, former education minister in Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League Government, was vandalized and set on fire. |
India issues instructions to Indians in Bangladesh
The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh issued a notice on December 19th morning urging members of the Indian community and Indian students living in Bangladesh to avoid travelling.
