Washington (USA) – The US President Donald Trump administration’s decision on import tariffs has faced significant opposition within the United States. A proposal to remove the 50% tariff on goods imported from India has been introduced in the US Congress. This has fueled discussions about a major rebellion against Donald Trump in the US.
1. Three influential American leaders have taken an aggressive stance against the increased import tariffs imposed by Trump on India. Three members of Congress, including Indian-American Raja Krishnamoorthi, along with Deborah Ross and Mark Veasey, have introduced a significant resolution in the US Congress. The resolution demands the immediate removal of the increased tariffs on India. These three lawmakers have opposed the Trump administration’s tariff decision from the beginning. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi called the tariff ‘counterproductive’. He stated, “These tariffs disrupt supply chains, harm American workers, and increase costs for consumers.” He also expressed the opinion that removing the tariffs on India would strengthen US-India relations and enhance economic and security cooperation.
2. Congressman Mark Veasey stated that India is an important trading partner of the United States. He also criticized the tariffs imposed by Trump on India as illegal. He expressed concern that these tariffs are significantly impacting ordinary American citizens who are already facing rising inflation.
3. Earlier in October, 19 members of Congress had sent a letter to Donald Trump requesting him to withdraw the tariffs to improve strained relations with India. Recently, another group from the Democratic party also expressed concern, stating that US-India relations are deteriorating. Indian-origin Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal had also expressed her views on this issue in strong terms in the House. She had stated that due to the increased tariffs on India, many businesses in the United States were on the verge of closure.
