New Delhi – The prevailing situation in Bangladesh constitutes India’s most serious strategic challenge since the Liberation War of 1971, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, chaired by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, has observed. While the situation may not necessarily spiral into total anarchy, the Committee has emphasised that India must handle developments with the utmost caution and strategic foresight. The Committee has also submitted several significant recommendations to the Government.
Key observations from the Committee’s report-
1. The primary factors behind the unrest in Bangladesh include the rise of Islamic radicalism, the growing influence of China and Pakistan, and the weakening political hold of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League.
2. Whereas the challenge in 1971 was centred on India’s security and a massive humanitarian crisis, the present situation reflects a generational shift, changes within Bangladesh’s political system, and strategic policies increasingly distancing the country from India.
3. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s stay in India is in accordance with India’s cultural values and humanitarian traditions. The Government should continue to uphold its principles and humanitarian outlook, while addressing the issue with prudence, sensitivity, and diplomatic maturity.
4. The evolving nature of Bangladesh’s relations with Pakistan, coupled with China’s expanding presence, is a matter of grave concern for India.
5. China is actively expanding its engagement across all sections of Bangladeshi society, including Jamaat-e-Islami. Representatives of Jamaat-e-Islami have reportedly visited China. India must remain highly vigilant to prevent any foreign power from establishing military bases in Bangladesh and should offer Dhaka credible and attractive alternatives in the areas of development, connectivity, and access to ports.
6. The current ban on Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League raises serious doubts about the inclusiveness and credibility of future elections in Bangladesh.
Editorial PerceptiveJust as India intervened militarily in 1971 to facilitate the creation of Bangladesh, a similar decisive course of action has now become imperative to safeguard India’s interests, ensure the protection of Hindus there, and prevent Bangladesh drifting away from India. |
