Citing losses suffered by US farmers, the US is set to impose an additional tariff on rice imported from India !

Tughlaq-style announcement by US President Donald Trump

Washington (US) – The United States is considering imposing additional tariffs on rice imported from India and fertilisers imported from Canada, US President Donald Trump announced while speaking at the White House. Trump has already imposed an overall tariff of 50 % on India.

Trump stated that cheap imports from other countries are harming US farmers. Countries such as India, Vietnam and Thailand are selling rice in the US at very low prices, which is adversely affecting the income of local farmers.

1. On this occasion, Trump asked his Secretary of the Treasury whether India had been granted any concessions with regard to rice.

2. The secretary responded that discussions on a bilateral trade agreement between the two countries are currently underway.

What will be the impact of imposing tariffs on rice ?

If Trump imposes additional tariffs on Indian rice, rice exported from India to the US will become significantly more expensive. This will have a direct impact on the pockets of consumers in the US who purchase Indian rice, as it will be costlier. Indian farmers and exporters who supply rice to the US may also suffer losses. Due to higher prices, demand for Indian rice in the US market may decline.

India does not export rice to the US in very large quantities. Therefore, this decision will not affect India’s rice industry. However, those whose businesses are directly linked to the US market will certainly face difficulties. India may have to identify new countries for rice export in future.

Editorial Perspective

It is evident to the entire world, that the United States is suffering the most, not due to India, but because of Trump himself. Trump is going to remain in power for another three years. The situation suggests that the United States may suffer further deterioration during this period. US farmers and the public need to seriously reflect on this.
